"On 21 April 1513, the wind was blowing in their favour, but an unknown force prevented Ponce de León's ships from advancing off the coast of Florida. The Gulf Stream had just been discovered, an ocean current that has marked navigation between America and Europe ever since. It was first mapped by Benjamin Franklin in 1770 and today an army of scientists, with their buoys and satellites, is watching to ensure that global warming does not turn off this climatic thermostat of the North Atlantic".

"It is a much bigger river than any other. It carries a thousand times more water per second than the Mississippi. It is 80 km wide at the beginning, almost 800 m deep and flows at a speed of more than 6 km/h".

The Gulf Stream rises in the Florida Strait (the strait between Cuba and Florida), carrying large amounts of warm water from the Gulf of Mexico northward.

It is a conveyor belt of surface water, which is cancelled out at a depth of 100 metres. The Gulf Stream is of great climatic importance due to its moderating effects on the climate of Western Europe.

The Gulf Stream originates and is maintained by 2 main forces. One force is the prevailing westerly winds and the other is the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) circulation. Of the 2 forces, the North Atlantic circulation is more important. The water, as it cools in the North Atlantic, sinks, as it has a higher density. The higher density is due to the cooling of the water and the higher salinity. salinity as part of the water freezes

The Gulf Stream, as it passes through the Mid-Atlantic, behaves like a great river, in fact the water flow is greater than the sum of the water flow of all the rivers. When it reaches the height of Europe, bifurcations of this current start to emerge. Part of it, as you can see in the picture, flows back down the coast of Portugal - this downstream water has not yet cooled down and contains heat energy from the Gulf of Mexico. This energy has a direct influence on the European climate, and more so on Portugal and Spain, giving them a much higher temperature than would be appropriate for their latitude.

Another part of the current sinks in Labrador Bay (see picture) and the other part continues towards Norway, sinking because it has increased its density, (due to an increase in temperature and salinity). These points where the water sinks are known as Deep Water Formation, and are the points that act as the engine of the entire thermohaline circulation that is the conveyor belt of the oceans and regulates the Earth's global climate.

American Diana Nyad, became the first person to swim the Florida Straits from Cuba to Florida without using a shark box. 177km in 53 hours, through the beginning of the Gulf Stream.
