We are going to look at different pH meters, how to measure pH pH Whether for experiments, for the aquarium or for the swimming pool, it is easy to use at home. On this section you have all the information about pH: scale, acidic substances, basic substances and various experiments.

TYPES OF PH METERS

We are going to analyse different types of pH meters, measuring them against a standard solution. A standard solution is a solution that keeps the pH constant at certain values, so that we can find out in detail the reliability of the pH measurement of each measuring method.

pH test strips

The pH measuring strips are strips whose operation is very intuitive, simple and clean. They are available in different qualities and graduations. The simplest are strips that vary in a pH range between 1 and 14. They are placed in the solution for 2 seconds and then the colour of the strips is compared with the standard that comes in the box.

ADVANTAGES: Clean, fast and intuitive.

DISADVANTAGES: It is a method that gives you an accuracy of up to 0.5 pH values. 0.5 (or 1 as in the case of the strips in the picture) in many cases is more than enough. In other cases, you will need tighter values (with jumps of 0.1 or 0.2). The following devices will allow you to do this. In particular, the strips with only 1 colour, imported from China, have a very low accuracy, in the order of 2 points in the pH values.

Digital pH meter

There are a multitude of digital pH meters, with different prices and qualities. From this one, which could be called the simplest, to complex digital laboratory pH meters.

This is a simple digital pH meter, which you can use for home experiments, to measure the pH of aquariums and swimming pools, giving you a resolution of 0.1 pH.

ADVANTAGES: Speed, resolution, simplicity. See how to measure with a digital phmeter.

DISADVANTAGES: Calibration required. See how calibrating a digital phmeter.

pH indicator drops

The pH indicator drops work in such a way that by introducing a few drops into the liquid to be analysed, it will turn a colour which, when compared with the standard, will give the pH value.

These droplets work only within certain pH values. The operation is

is based on the fact that some materials modify their colour in certain ranges, so it only works in certain ranges. In the case of the one we present to you, the material is PHENOL RED, and it modifies its colour between 6.8 and 8.2, which makes it perfect for pool water measurements, where the pH range will vary between these values.

ADVANTAGES: Fast, clean, intuitive, 0.2 accuracy.

DISADVANTAGES: pH measurement range 6.8 to 8.2 only
