The Water pH<\/a> is one of the parameters to be measured in any type of water, be it drinking water, seawater or, as is the case with Pool water pH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In each case, pH maintenance has a meaning and we will see in the pool why to keep it within certain values, how to measure it, and what to do to raise or lower the pH.<\/p>\n

PH-VALUE POOL WATER<\/h2>\n

The pH value in the pool water is a fundamental value. On the one hand it must be maintained at values that are not irritating to the skin, and on the other hand it must be maintained at values that are suitable for the chlorine can perform its function<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In short, the pH of pool water<\/strong> must be kept between pH= 7.2 and 7.8<\/strong><\/p>\n

MEASURING THE PH OF THE POOL WATER<\/h2>\n

To measure the pH of the pool water, you can use one of the following methods pH measurement<\/a>. Knowing that the values will be between 7 and 8, you need an accuracy of at least 0.1. You can use devices such as this dropwise comparison, where the values are between 7 and 8.<\/p>\n

The advantage of this method is that you have the advantage of including the chlorine measurement<\/a>. You can buy it in specialised shops such as leroy merlin, or at Amazon<\/a>. The method of using this system is really simple.<\/p>\n

RAISING THE PH OF THE POOL WATER<\/h2>\n

In water disinfection processes, the pH plays a very important role. The pH is a value in the pool that must be monitored on an almost daily basis, as all human contact and the disinfection process itself is changing the pH of the water.<\/p>\n

Whenever you want to raise the pH of a liquid, you must use a base. In the case of swimming pools, the most commonly used base is sodium hydroxide<\/a>. Sodium hydroxide is a very strong base, (in fact in high concentrations it is used for unblock<\/a>), but if it is applied well dissolved (and above all following the dosage indicated by the manufacturer), it will allow you to adjust the pH of the water.<\/p>\n

You will see in the pH boosters you find on the market that the product they are made of is sodium hydroxide.<\/p>\n

LOWERING THE PH OF THE POOL WATER<\/h2>\n

Just as to raise the pH of water we use caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, to lower the pH we use hydrochloric acid, just as you hear it. If you look at the market, all pH-lowering compounds have as their main component hydrochloric acid<\/a>. Hydrochloric acid is a very strong and dangerous acid. When it dissolves in the large water surface of the swimming pool, it is very diluted and the pH is more evenly distributed.<\/p>\n

The special feature of hydrochloric acid and caustic soda is that they react with each other to neutralise each other, creating water and common salt, according to this reaction:<\/p>\n

HCl + NaOH -> H2O + NaCl\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Common salt is also sodium chloride and has the formula NaCl.<\/p>\n

OTHER VALUES TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT IN THE SWIMMING POOL<\/h2>\n
