Stainless steel is an alloy.\u00a0stainless steel<\/b>\u00a0is defined as an alloy steel (with a minimum of 10 % to 12 % chromium content by mass).<\/sup>It may also contain other metals such as molybdenum and nickel.<\/p>\n Stainless steel is a highly corrosion resistant steel, as the chromium or other alloying metals it contains have a high affinity for oxygen and react with it to form a passivating layer, thus preventing corrosion of the iron (purely stainless metals, which do not react with oxygen are gold and platinum, and of lower purity are called corrosion resistant, such as those containing phosphorus). However, this layer can be affected by some acids, resulting in the iron being attacked and oxidised by intergranular mechanisms or generalised pitting.
